mum: yes, so far it seems headed in a better direction than the past couple of summers, so keeping fingers crossed that will be the trend. Fitting into clothes again that had become too small is always a great morale booster.
natalie: me? tanned? that's physically impossible. But I do cheat wherever I can get away with it. I've tried tanning creams, which give a nice glow but unfortunately for me, rub off on my clothes a lot. I've tried spray tans, nice result but same problem with the clothes.
So far this year (I'm going to get lynched for this) I decided to go to the tanning salon to work on a little bit of a "real fake tan" base which makes me feel better about wearing summer clothes. I don't like getting out in the sun much and burn very easily, so this way I can control just how much I'm getting and don't end up with a "farmer tan".
I know it's bad for you, so am not recommending that and to anyone reading this, please spare me the lecture and just say "gee smiler, you look like you've got a healthy glow going!".
Jergens cream for light skin is VERY progressive and is a good one to go with if you're nervous about getting marks. Avene (pricier) was also recommended to me for the same reason.
littlewolfe: It's so much the summer heat as being able to fit into some of my summer clothes again (which I wasn't able to wear last summer) that I'm happy about. The heat is a bit much for me quite frankly, but lots of cold water to drink and to splash on my face helps.
I've always been against the tanning salon thing until this year, I'm really considering it. I'm super white too, and I'd like a little color on my legs!
Plus, you are very right about the base thing!
I'm a mess with the tanning lotions, I end up with orange hands.
Natalie: honestly, I feel like I should have put in a disclaimer before telling you about the fake n'bake because I do NOT condone it. It's just something I do to appease my vanity because knowing myself I might spend the whole summer in long pants and sleeves just to hide my blueish-white skin. And it does make me feel better somehow, though I shouldn't say so.
Whatever you do, if you do go, be sure to take it easy and go once a week at most at first and for just a few minutes to give your skin time to get used to the exposure. You won't see results for a while that way, but you'll be sure to avoid disastrous sunburns.
