Thirteen Things About Smiler [#6]

Photobucket
Or 13 places I dream of traveling to

Last week I listed some of the places I've had the good fortune to visit. This week, in the spirit of new beginnings, with a brand new year close on the horizon, I thought I'd list (in no particular order) some of the places I've always wanted to go to, and some I wish to revisit as well.

1. India. It's surprising that I haven't been to India yet, considering that so many aspects of Indian living were part of my own daily life, what with my hippie upbringing. There was homemade vegetarian Indian food which was pretty well the staple. Plenty of Yoga with my dad's twice daily practice and ashram visits. Indian philosophers (I nearly went to one of his schools!) and of course the constant waft of incense and Hindu deities on posters, in books, small statuettes... and of course the Indian musical influence, starting with Ravi Shankar himself and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band which was often featured on the playlist, and is The Beatles' album that is "often cited as their magnum opus." My parent's friends were all seemingly coming back or on the way to India so it was a hot topic of conversation. I feel like I've already been there. Would be nice to see it with my own eyes.

2. Israel. I lived there for four years of my childhood and haven't been back in twenty five years. My father lives there with his little sprite of a dog called Lulu, a miniature Pinscher that I can't wait to meet. I haven't seen my father for a good four years (hi Zev!), so we are much overdue. I also long to see the country of my childhood again, although I'm sure I'll barely recognize it. 25 years is a very long time for such a young country, and a whole lot has changed during my absence...

3. France. To visit my mum and her husband in Graulhet and then of course the obligatory stay in Paris for a few days. Paris is one of my favourite cities in the world, and I came very near to moving there another lifetime ago, a dozen years ago or so now. (Sigh). At least I have some of my favorite singers to listen to in the meantime. Their oh-so-French voices always bring me back to that magical city.

4. Australia. My latest love affair. Australia and I got along swimmingly well. I absolutely felt like I fit right in, which doesn't happen all that often. And everything from the people and accent and culture to the wonderfully varied topography, that melding of British influence with Eastern philosophy resulting in mindblowing creativity is truly fascinating. I will be back there soon enough. Oh yeah.

5. Africa. I don't know how, I don't know when, but I feel I need to go there, and more than once. I have a friend who works for a humanitarian organization in the Ivory Coast. She's repeatedly invited me to spend some time to chill out there, and that sounds like a gentle introduction to the continent — since she's already familiar with the place and the culture and can show me around. And then there's South Africa and Kenya and Morocco, and Egypt and so many other wonderful places to see as well.

6. Thailand. I don't think I need to explain; the culture, the people, the beaches, the food. Just sounds perfect. I must go there someday.

7. Italy. It's hard for me to believe that I haven't set foot there yet. Florence, Rome, the Tuscan sun, Venice, Bologna, Parma... I have a right mind to go do a gourmet exploration of Italy, much in the same way Elizabeth Gilbert of Eat, Pray, Love fame did.

8. South America. A whole other continent I have yet to discover. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru... I feel like I should break into a song just saying those names.

9. Tokyo. I worked with one of the best lifestyle photographer in the world when I was in Australia who said to me that I MUST go there to get a infusion of mind blowing creativity, Tokyo-style. He didn't use those exact words, but he's a travel & trends expert and I would do well to follow his counsel sooner than later I should hope. Don't know how or when, but the Big Guy knows it's on the wish list already.

10. Paris. Again. Just because.

11. I'm not even mentioning New York, because it's practically next door and it's a given for me since I always end up going at least a couple of times a year. But I've never been to Arizona and New Mexico and the idea of that as a road trip has always appealed to me.

12. Russia. I have roots there, since that's where my father was born, but I also feel a strong connection to the slavic spirit emotionally and intellectually. My mother has always been fascinated with all things Russian and it's been a big part of our lives, be it through books or music or politics (in my mom's case — I never took to that myself, being more into boys and altogether lighter fare).

13. I could find many many more places to fill this list with, but I choose to leave this option open to possibility. Sometimes the best trips are the ones that we weren't planning for at all. A doorway opens, and we're off for another wonderful discovery...

Do go to New Mexico. Do come to Graulhet. Do go to India. Do it all, sweet girl. (nope, I'm not doing the thirteen thingies this time around - working on my twelve non-resolutions instead )

All these places sound so decadent, and so exotic. I've never travelled - despite my Sagittarian sun sign.

My hot spot at the moment is Morocco. We've been eating lots of Moroccan food recently the the idea of actually sampling it from a street stall, of soaking in the culture, the art, the history, the archeitecture ... ahhh I'm just not going to get to sleep tonight ..

Here's mine - theme of gratitude http://jodicleghorn.blogspot.com/2007/12/thirteen-things-to-be-grateful-for-in.html

jodi: the word "decadent" is not the first that comes to my mind when describing Graulhet. "Decaying" might be more appropriate... But if you love Moroccan food, you must, must go there. Moroccan cuisine is absolutely the best of the Northern African cuisines (even my husband agrees - and he was raised in Tunisia.)

Great places! I know I'm biased, but you might wish to consider Wyoming as an option. Forget Yellowstone, and travel off of the main freeways. There's beautiful country there that you'll go camerea happy with.

I want to go with you! You've got the travel bug running through my veins.

Everytime someone posts one of these I'm reminded how badly I wish we could afford to travel.

Happy TT

Your list sounds a lot like mine. I have so many places I want to see! I have already been to Brazil and Italy but have yet to make it to Oz which I would love to visit. I also want to see much more of the US seeing as I have only been to Detroit, Chicago and NYC.

Now you have given me the wanderlust again...must plan my next trip!

So have you picked one, booked reservations, bought tickets, or packed your bags yet? Do you need a companion? I'm retired ... and have a bit of wanderlust in me (though I also have a Labrador Retriever pup and a kitty who would miss me if I left for long), so maybe I can't get away after all.
Take pictures with your camera and post them from wherever you go!
Hugs and blessings,

Happy Thursday!

Well, I've been to France and Italy and NYC many times. I'm in AZ as I write. Inida is growing on my list and I've wanted to tour the Ho Chi Mihn trail for a very long time. Now to save the money and create the time.

All great choices. We did Russia 2 years ago and really enjoyed. Looking forward to Italy in 2008.

My TT is up. http://collectingmythoughts.blogspot.com/2007/12/thirteen-little-things-when-we-are.html

I love to travel, too. Unfortunately I'm at the stage right now where I don't really go any place new by myself and I don't have a travel buddy. My eyesight and hearing are such that it is difficult to go any place new unaccompanied. Now if I were to be able to afford Lasik and a hearing aid, I'd never stop going places! Big "IF" though.

To you all & Lee: I'm not quite sure how it's all going to come together since I can't plan anything at the moment being somewhat tied down, not to mention that all this wonderful travel requires financing (and time of course), but I've sent my request out to the universe — now let's see what happens...

Jodi: I am surprised that you haven't traveled yet — Sags are notorious wanderers. Morocco does sound lovely indeed. But there's all kinds of ways to travel in the meantime without ever leaving one's own home too, I'm living proof of that. :-)

square1: Wyoming — I'll put it down on my list (the one I've published today isn't exhaustive by any means.

moondance: there's all kinds of ways to travel without incurring major costs, but yes, there is always some expense involved. I wish you to have the resources to make that dream come true.

bob-kat: no matter how much traveling I've done or will ever do, there'll always be other places to add on the list. Whether "realistic" or not, I see all that as so many opportunities for renewal and discovery.

storyteller: I wish! But my health problems at the moment are preventing me from leaving for any amount of time for now. Also, before I do get that kitten, I do have to carefully consider how that would affect my capacity to get away.

geggie: you seem to be full of resources, I'm sure you'll find the way to get to those places. Italy — dreamy.

corina: I don't quite know what to say, it seems like such a shame that those things should prevent you from going anywhere, and also that it costs so much in America basic health needs fulfilled. But as they say, where there's a will there's a way. And besides, you never know when you might meet you traveling companion.

It's nice to read you thinking about travelling again. That is a wonderful sign. I myself have been waiting for peace to break out in Israel to return after living there for a year during college DECADES ago. I love the southwest and imagine travelling back there when my husband and I are older and retired. I used to want to go everywhere, see everything, but 9/11 broke something in my that I don't think will ever get fixed again. I've travelled a lot and I don't care if I never travel again. I'm more interested in inward journeys, thought I know travel can prompt those as well.

Been to Israel..loved it...really want to go to India!! Actually..everywhere else..love traveling! Happy New Year!

Israel has indeed changed quite a bit in the last 25 years, for better and for worse (lots of McDonalds...).

Anyway - hope you get to go to at least some of these appetizing destinations. If you do go again to Australia, consider a stop at the Cook Islands on your way back, especially Aitutaki. That's what islands were meant to be.

May you make it to each and every one and enjoy every minute of them.

Oh, and take pictures so that I can live vicariously through you. :D

India is magic! You notice it as soon as you step out of the airport building. So too is Thailand, but in a different way. And France outside Paris is beautiful, and you'll love Rome. And Abbey Road was better than Sgt. Pepper!

Check out my blog. I was inspired by yours. I've posted a Thirteen Places I Have Traveled To (Part one). It got too long to leave as one post so I broke it in two. Part two will be posted in a day or so. Come see!

The picture i think is Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Welcome to India when ever you find the time and inclination.
not a very clean and hygenic place i'm afraid. i don't remember, i have a post on Rajasthan i think. i am old, my memory is fading.
India is a land of extremes, you'd love it or hate it. Very chaotic but colourful. HHope you would visit one day.

My overwhelming memory of Paris was of being pestered--by street vendors, by youths trying to get into the door at the youth hostel. ;) Maybe I'd like it better now.

Good luck with your travels. I have a serious case of wanderlust myself, so I hope you can visit those places. :)

I would love to visit Mexico, France, India, Cape Town and Russia too. It would cost alot to travel unless you have a job that gets you to those places for free.

Anyway, I hope you get to go to those countries.

If you love to see pictures of my travel, goto my travel blog. I am still compiling my pictures and try to put them together.

Where is that door? I'd like to travel there to walk through it. Have you ever been to Ireland? It was my favorite so far.
